Social Issue Reading Reflection: Walk Two Moons

The book “Walk Two Moons” it is mainly about a girl named Sal who’s mom disappeared. Also, a girl named Phoebe’s mom disappeared. Phoebe’s mom comes back to Phoebe though but Sal’s mom does not. One night when Gram was in the hospital from a snake bite, Gramps sent Sal off in a car to drive around and do stuff while he stayed at the hospital with his wife. At around midnight, Sal was at a cliff driving around it until the cops caught her. She was listening to a story about a bus wreck that had gone over the cliff. Then the cops told her that her mom had been in that bus accident and had not lived. There was only one surviver and that was someone she knew. Then they told her that the surviver had been holding her mom’s hand and had been the last one with her.

Some of my thinking on this book is One of the ideas I thought of is when Sal keeps thinking of her mother and imagining she will come back. My thinking on that is that Sal must not be giving up on her mom.I think she is still hoping her mother will come back some day and Sal will finally become happy.

Another one of my thinking is that when Gram got bitten by the snake and she was hurt really badly and had to go to the doctor, that must make Sal really sad because her mother is gone and missing and now her Grandmother has just been bitten by a snake and has found out she has to go to the hospital to try to live. That must be the worst part in Sal’s life because as far as she knows 2 of her closer family members a re about to die.

One more of my thinkings was when Phoebe kept receiving messeges at her doorstep by a stranger and the messeges include random things like Never judge a man ntil you’ve walked two moons in his moccasins. I would be a little bit freaked out because if someone is leaving mysterious messeges at your door and you don’t know who is leaving them, that would be kind of scary.

I think the social issue of this book is loss, and death. I think these are the only ones because Sal’s mom was a HUGE loss to Sal and for most of the time she was a death because of the bus crash she was in. Also, Phoebe’s mom was a loss to Phoebe and a little to Sal because she wasn’t with Phoebe anymore and so Phoebe always had something missing to her. That part would be her mom. However Phoebe had her mother come back. So those are the social issues in the book that stuck out to me.

I think Walk Two Moons was an interesting book to read.

Social Issue Reflection-Belle Prater’s Boy by:Ruth White

In the book “Belle Prater’s Boy” it is about a girl named Gypsy who’s father has died by killing himself and another girl named Woodrow who’s mother named Belle Prater ran off or disappeared during the night. But the police tracked all around the house but they found no footprints or anything that represented her.

So all through their lives people tease them about it and make fun of them during school and after school. People also sometimes refer Woodrow to “Prater’s Boy”.

What I think the main social issue is in the book is death and loneliness. I say death because Gypsy’s dad had killed himself because he didn’t like the way he looked and also Belle Prater didn’t exactly die but she ran away, was captured or she was killed by someone. So that can somehow fit in death. Next I think that loneliness is a social issue in this book because Gypsy and Woodrow don’t have friends. They only hang out and play with each other everyday. Because their father and mother’s are not living with them anymore they only have one parent in each of their family. So they don’t have that extra accompanyment with them anymore. Also their lives are hard in school because nobody wants to be their friend and they get teased a lot.

Here are some of the stop and jot thinking’s I came up with while reading the book. On note was that when died was buried into a grave. Before they buried him he was still wearing his diamond ring he had. That night once they had buried him two grave robbers arrived at his grave. They had also attended the funeral earlier and had spotted the diamond ring. So the grave robbers tried pulling off the ring so they could sell it for money but it was stuck and couldn’t come off. What they did next was they took a knife and chopped off his finger. Unfortunately, the buried man was buried alive. He was never dead. My thinking of that was I didn’t think that was fair at all for the man to be grave robbed. I also didn’t think that it wasn’t fair that if someone had just died and had been buried then you can go rob all the stuff from the person especially when you have to cut off their finger to get the stuff you want. Anoher of example of my thinking is when Gypsy had these terrible nightmares about a person but she couldn’t see the face of it. In the beginning of the book I was wondering who could cause that fear in a nightmare. But in the end I started to realize that the person that Gypsy couldn’t see the head of was her father.

Matt’s Songkran Break

Here is my day- by -day reflection on Matt’s Songkran Break.

Monday: On Monday (the first day off of school) I spent my day with my friends creating funny but also a little bit weird videos about just random things we thought of while chatting about happenings. We made one about a mixed up version of baseball that we called “dodo baseball”. We also made one about an older boy at a kiddy toy store riding all the little tiny vehicles. After he was riding for a while he ripped off the side of the toy. All the security rushed in attacking him for breaking it.

Although there were very many injuries, it was super entertaining and extra fun making them.

Tuesday: On Tuesday I also had my friend over making more crazy movies/videos but also with my brother and his friend. Again it was tremendously fun and terrifingly painful. After we got bored of doing that, we had an awesome nerf gun fight. Bullets were flying everywhere. I can’t even count how many things we either knocked over or hit dead on. Around 4:30 we tried to convince our hardest to have a sleepover that night. And it worked. I spent the night at his house. It was awesome, we were up until 1:30 in the morning and got up at 6:30. We were exausted the following day but never admitted it.

Wednesday: On Wednesday we were extremely exausted and tired the following day but never admitted that fact. The worst was that later that day we were completely bored at my house and so asked my mom what we could do. She suggested a lot of things but none of them sounded pleasing to us. Then she came up with a brilliant idea. She said we could go up and see a movie. I asked her which ones were out and she said that Race to Witch Mountain was out and it looked very good. So we decided to go view that. While my friend and I were riding up an escalator with dad who was coming with us, we were like yawning maniacs. But after every one we said we weren’t tired.

After the movie we were satisfied with the outcome. I thought it was really good. Once we arrived at my house we planned for my friend and another friend of mine to spend the night again but this time at my house. We had a guest coming that night so we were going to stay up until she got here. It was awesome. We watched another movie… well part of one. Then we went out and played wii for a while then went upstairs to my room to play games just for something to do.

Thursday: On Thursday our guest was up bright and early, as well as everybody else at my house. We basically got up and played X-box with my brother until people had to go home. We had a tiny breakfast along the way and then resumed our concentration on the game.

Once everyone left I called up Gavin ANOTHER friend of mine to see if he wanted to gather up some guys to go play baseball at the school for a while. He answered with a yes but said he would come over first. So when he got here we flipped through probably the whole I.S.B. phone directory in search of people that was still here that were still in town but also available to play. In the end we only gathered up one other person so we said we would just go up and play catch instead of a game. The day wrapped up as we ended up going to a restraunt close by and having dinner there.

Friday: On Friday Gavin came over again and played NERF wars with my brother and I. It was Gavin and I vs. my brother. It was so fun but we totally crushed him because of probably the unfair teams we created. On the last round we discovered that we had handcuffs. So once my brother ran out of bullets or he couldn’t go anywhere we cuffed him up and taped his wrists so he couldn’t unlock them with a special switch. It was all fun so don’t think my friends and I torture my brother all the time.

Anyways, Gavin brought up the idea he could maybe spend the night at my house. I immediately called my mom to confirm it was alright. Unfortunately, she disagreed with it and said NO. I could tell 2 sleepovers a week will do with but 3 is just over the top. She probably thought I was nuts.

Sunday: On Sunday (the last day until school is back I was invited to go airsofting with some friends and their dads at 1. I took advantage and asked my dad if I could go. At first he freaked me out because he joked with me I couldn’t go. But in the end it was a yes. So I called up one of my other friends to see if he wanted to go with us. He said yes too. However he needed a ride so at about 12:30 we went to pick him up.

So when we got to his house he got in the car and we drove off. My dad didn’t know where it was so we had to explain to him where to turn. When we got there all the people were waiting so we quickly got ready and started to play. The teams were kids against parents since all the kids had their dad with them other than me and Parker. At the end of the day when we finished playing the score had tied. Each team had won 3 times and lost 3 times. It was close the whole time though because we were up 3-2 going into the last round but the parents took it away the last round.

That is how my Songkran break ended up being like.

Reflection of S.O.S Titanic

Reflection on S.O.S Titanic

The book S.O.S Titanic was about the crash of the Titanic. What happened was a boy named Barry had to leave Scotland and travel on the Titanic to New York where he can meet his parents. Along the way he met a lot of people on the ship. However on e person stuck out to him and that was another passenger who is in a way superstitious. He was reading a book called The Titan. He said it was about a ship called Titan which crashed into an iceberg. What shocked me about this was that at the end of a chapter the book said “ A man stepped to the side covering part of the white paint on the boat with Titanic written. When the man stepped to the side he covered up the letters “ic” and the lettering read “Titan”.

This book was interesting to me because at some points of it the text was so boring but at some points it was so exciting making it more and more interesting. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes reading about major crashes like the Titanic or the Concorde. Also to anyone who likes to read for lots of futher information about maybe major crashes.

Here is some of my thinking on the book. At the beginning when Barry was asking about the rules of where different class passengers can go onboard the ship. The chaperone of the area told Barry that third class passengers can never come up to second class or the third class. He also said that first class passengers can go anywhere on the ship they wanted to. I think that the ship had strict rules because of the time of work they put into the Titanic and because it was so complicated that the crew needed to make up somewhat strict rules to make sure that nothing went wrong. Another example of my thinking is when Barry at the beginning when he was boarding the ship, he didn’t care for Pegeen at all but now Barry is searching for Pegeen when the ship is sinking. My thinking is: I think Barry has changed because he is risking his life looking for Pegeen. If he hadn’t cared for Pegeen, then he would just forget about her and save himself before the ship sinks. One other thinking I had for the book was when the chaperone of the area in first class was talking about the different classes and how they are important onboard the ship. My thinking is: I think the author is wants to tell us that people do have different level tickets now, but people are allowed on all parts of the ship.

Reflection of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

Reflection on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry

In the book “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by: Mildred D. Taylor” I think it is a book about segragation because there are some standout points where the whites think they are better than the blacks.

I would recommend this book to people who are more axcelerated readers because of the way the text is written. You may think that you know the book well and understand what is going on but when you really think about what it is mainly about and what the solution is and the problem are, then it might be a little blurry. But then you will sometime get it.

Some of my thinking’s were: When Little Man threw his new book down that the teacher had given him because it listed the race of “nigra” under the quality of book as poor books. My thinkning was that Little Man must have been very much offended because of the graph of race and the quality of book. Another on of my thinkning’s was when the teacher had said once Little Man had thrown the book on the ground, “Well that is what you are.” What I thought about that part was if I were Little Man at that point in the story, I would be sad and furious at the same time. I also wouldn’t want her as a teacher. I had another thinking of when the teacher had called in the mother for the childens actions during class I thought the mother was on the childrens side because when she saw what they had got upset at, she taped up the part with the nigra on all the books. Also, when the childrens father came home he talked to them and said “Just look at y’all. Aint y’all something. Cant hardly call y’all babies anymore.” What I thought about what he had said was I guessed he was from the southern part of the United States because I know that people from the southern part have a kind of accent like he just then. One other example I had showing my thinking was when a man was going to push a boy named Jeremy out onto the street unless he apologized for getting in his daughters way. As you can guess, they were white people and believed that they had more respect than the blacks, which Jeremy was. The man said “ You apologize to Miz Lillian Jean this minute!” “ I-I already apologized.” Said Jeremy. I thought if I was in this situation with a man who obviously wont give up on him saying sorry, I wouldn’t do what he said and just get pushed in the road. Instead of getting overtaken by someone who thinks he is much stronger and much more effective, I would rather be pushed out onto the road.

Baseball (a poem) By:Matt

Baseball, Baseball

come to me

decend upon my glove

Ping!

This is it

Just arrive in my glove

I spring up

like an eagle with its prey

Then shift into airborn

the ball converts

into main focus

while on the lookout for the ball

I give attention to a

Knock!

Then a strong startle

and beam of darkness

then a deafning shutter

nearly like an explosion of thunder

but

instead

it was the roar of the

CROWD!!

Cheyenne Again–Reflection

Ty and I (Matt) are writing a blog post about the book “Cheyenne Again” by Eve Bunting. We learned the strategy of making references about when the story was taking place and how did we figure that out. For example, on page 13 we thought the young Native American was having a hard time adjusting to the lifestyle. We figured that out because they were taking away his buckskin, and the Americans took away the deer skin moccasins his mother made him.

What was happening in the book was the Whiteman taking the boy away from his family. He was taken to a boarding school. However the Americans had a different lifestyle. Most all people were making fun of him. Then his favorite teacher told him to not give up and don’t forget that you are always a Native.

Throughout the story we were using this strategy. For example we used the strategy on the title page by saying that we thought that the word Cheyenne is a Native tribe that existed many years ago. So from that we could say that the book was placed a long time ago. We thought that it took place around the 1800’s.

Another example is on page 25 when the boy was getting chained to a brick and left there for the night. We think that the boy must have done something wrong or disobeyed a rule that the Americans had. We think this might this might be prove that the story is being taken place in an earlier time because of the amount of money they were using. When this might have been taken place 5 dollars could have been a lot of money.
