Reflection on While No One Was Watching By: Kentaro

This story was about kids who steal something or do bad stuff so they can earn money and so they can live. But it is hard not to do bad stuff when you need to do it.

The social issue in this book is theft and living alone with only the kids. I said it is a theft because Earl and Wayne the big character in tikes to. His book and they steal a bike so they can have money. Each time they steal a bike I think their stupid. They can make 5 or 6 dollar each time. They steal bikes to own money because while these characters went to Aunt Lula’s house, Aunt Lula disappears so they needed to make money by their self. Earl had one little sister and one little brother so he needed to work for him to. I learned that it is hard to live without the adult because if you want live alone you need to do something bad to affect other people.

Also in this book there was a part that I thought it was burring. In this story there is a kid called Frankie that eats a lot. When Wayne and Earl go to ride the bike they didn’t let Frankie go on the bike because he is fat and he can’t keep up with them. In that part I thought it was kind of burring.

I wonder why this author wrote this story. I guess maybe he saw it on the TV or his friend was like this.

I think the author wanted to tell us the reader, that it is hard to live alone by no adults because nobody can feed you or earn money for you to live.

My Songkran Holiday by Kentaro

In my holiday Songkran I went to HuaHin.  Me and my family went to HuaHin to play golf. The first golf course was called BLACK MOUNTAIN COUNTRY CLUB AND HOTEL. It was where the golf championship was played and it was really hard. It was inside the mountain and the sight from there was also good. While we were playing golf, the sound of thunder was near. My mom wanted to stop but me and my dad played normally so my mom just followed us. At the end we compared our scores and I got the best score out of us three. So I ‘m allowed to have anything. In the hotel we had a good luck because we got our room up graded. At morning I realized that somebody from fifth grade was in same hotel. We stayed in that hotel for only night and morning.

On Saturday my mom came back from Japan. My mom went to Japan because my sister was going to Japanese high school in Japan Kanagawa. While my mom was staying in Japan, me and my dad was alone in our apatment. I was kind of sad when my sister went away. But until my mom came back we played golf, bowling and other staff that is fun.

It is kind of boring when it is Songkran because nothing is happening. Like soccer team, small japanese school and stuff like that.  But I had fun.

Reflection on Book Hatchet By Kentaro

I think in this book it is talking about a boy called Brian who had his airplane crashed and he is in the Canadian wilderness. And also in the book he has only Hatchet with him. He lives alone and he is a city boy so I think it is difficult for him to be alone in nowhere(canadian wilderness).

I think the social issues in this book is homeless and living alone. By this social issue I learned a new thing. That is you can live alone if you are beliving your self and to care about your self good.

I think the most important part of the story is when he got rescued because he was finally away from the wilderness which he was tired with. He survived with only the hatchet and that was amazing for me to think.

I wonder why Gary paulsen wrote about one boy who is staying in the wilderness alone with his hatchet. My guess for this is maybe because he read something about people staying in nowhere.

I think he wrote this for the reader to tell that if you are alone in nowhere it is not over you can try and to be brave to your self.

Habitat for Humanity Reflection by Kentaro

This organization called Habitat for Humanity helps people who are poor and don’t have houses because of the disasters. It takes about a month to build a house. I can help this organization by paying money to  build a house.

Book Reflection on Caddie Woodlawn

Caddie Woodlawn

By: Carol Ryrie Brink

In this book there was a girl named Caddie and she was a brave adventurer and her father wanted  her to be like that. So Caddie always stays with her brothers Tom and Warren and tries to beat them at different things.

In this book I can understand how the characters are feeling like for example, in the book where it talked about Nero the dog of Caddie’s, Uncle Edmund wanted to have Nero, and Caddie said yes. After about a month Caddie had a letter from Uncle Edmund that Nero went away. Caddie was feeling so sad and mad at Uncle Edmund because he said that he will bring a puppy instead. If I was Caddie ,I would be so sad like her and also I would be so mad at uncle Edmund for losing our member of the family.

I didn’t like this book because it was kind of boring how the book only talked about what Caddie did and there weren’t anything interesting for me. I do not recommend other people to read this book because I think that they will feel the same thing.

Reflection on The Big Waves by Kentaro

THE BIG WAVE

By: Pearl S. Buck

Kino lives on a farm, beside the mountain. There is a friend of Kino’s named Jiya. Jiya lives in the fishing village below. Everyone knows about the big wave (tsunami) including Kino and Jiya. Nobody thinks that the tsunami will wipe out every village. In the story there is a tsunami that wiped Jiya’s fishing village. Jiya’s family dies except Jiya. So then Kino‘s family decides to live with Jiya. Jiya is so sad that he does not talk. Kino’s father says to his family to not to talk to him because he thinks that Jiya needs an alone time. The days pass away from the day tsunami came. One day this Old Gentle man comes to see Jiya because he wants Jiya to be his son. But what Jiya says is…………

I liked this book because it was really interesting how the characters in this book acted, for example Kino’s family acted interestingly for me when they didn’t talk to Jiya, when Jiya’s family died.

I found that this book and another book are similar because in other book there is a dog. He gets shot by an American person and dies. Also in this book, Jiya’s family dies. This book is about Japan, but I did not think that it’s a historical fiction since this kind of event can happen at anytime right now.

I understood how tsunami hurts people’s feelings very much. If I were Jiya in this book, I would be feeling extremely sad about the death of my family. I would be doing the same thing as Jiya did which is to stay alone and cry a lot. I learned how awful the tsunami is so when I hear the new about tsunami, I will think, ah!

The Scrimshaw Ring-Reflection on a reading strategy.

Harry and I (Kentaro) were reading book called The Scrimshaw Ring by William Jaspersohn. By looking at the cover we thought that it was about 300 hundred years ago because there was an old ship behind the boy. Throughout the story, we were using the strategy of building the world of the story in our minds by looking at all the details of how the story is different from our own lives.

We read the blurb on the front jacket of the book and we found out that it was from 1710 and it was from the East coast in Newport Rhode Island. On pages 5 and 6, the family of  William was wearing old clothes that we don’t wear right now.

On page 7and 6 the picture showed us that there was a difference between now and long time ago. We now don’t have a buggy but in the olden days there was a buggy. We can call horse and a carriage. We also know by the picture of page 11 and 12 that mutiny was when the crew went against the captain.

The crew stole all the food and animals maybe because they did not have many things to eat in the ship. We also think the pirate did not hurt Will because William was special, instead he did give William the ring.

We thought the story was old because of the clothes and transport the ship.
