Juhyun’s Social Issue book Reflection on Surviving the Applewhites

In this book, there is a teenager called Jake. He smokes, swears, and does other inappropriate stuff. Jake really cares about his hair and likes the style of it. In fact his parent went to jail because his parent planted a drug in their basement. Jake just goes to school. Also in school, he gets suspended in a lot of them. His record was to get suspended in 3 weeks. And he gets sent to the Applewhites family, and changes. In this book, the social issue is probably juvenile. I think that because Jake is not yet old enough to smoke and probably also not old enough to swear. Also nobody is ever old enough to burn your school down. I wonder how the author thought of a character like Jake, and the actions he did that fit his characteristics. Maybe the author’s message is that you can change your characteristic from any situation.

Book Reflection on The Pinballs by:Betsy Byars By:Juhyun

In the book The Pinballs, there were three kids, Carlie, Harvey, Thomas J. Thomas J didn’t have a parent, Harvey had a father but his father ran over him by the car by pressing drive instead of stop. Carlie had two step fathers who hit her, and both were so mean to her, so at last they all end up in a foster home. But unfortunatly, Harvey became contageous. But when the Carlie, and Thomas J baught him a puppy, he got better. I think the social issue in this book is that children being ingnored by their parents. I think that because all of their parents ingnore them some way. The part when the bad legged boy getsthe puppy, I thought that nothing would happen, but since it healed him, that event amazed me. I still wonder what Thomas J and Carlie would want. Because, since Harvey got a puppy and got healed, I wonder what is something that Carlie and Thomas J would want. In this book, I think the author’s message is that don’t be sad about something sad and do something else, and solve it.

My songkran break By:Juhyun

The first thing I did in my  Songkran holiday is go to Korea. At the beginning I was very happy for seeing my grandma. In Korea I watched 3 movies, played baseball, basketball, watched so much TV. The movies I watched are Fast and Furious4, A Korean movie, and knowing. They were all interesting. Baseball was more often played than basketball with my brother, my uncle and me. I liked both of them. But the bad part was that I got hit by a ball right at my face. Even though, I still liked to play nbase ball and to be in Korea.

Reflection of the Barn By: Juhyun

The book I’m reflecting on is called The Barn by Avi. I am reflecting on this book is because I read it most recently and is also very well written. In the beginning of the book, the main character, Ben, has to go back home from school, because his father has a disease. Ben doesn’t want to go but at last he does. Ben has a brother and a sister that helps him look after father. They are just living one day by one day waiting to communicate with father. One day Ben says, “If you recognize me blink” and then he blinked. Then Ben told his brother and his sister that father understood him. They all thought Ben was crazy, but as time passed, they started to believe Ben. Few days later when Ben was talking to father, Ben talked about building a new barn, he said, “If you want a new barn, blink”. Father blinked a lot of time. That made Ben thinks that if they build a new barn, father will be healed. So they built a barn just for father. The night they finished, father died! Ben was so upset that he didn’t tell father that he made the barn. But then his sister told Ben that father stayed alive to hear that the barn was built, and that since he knew he could die peacefully. That made Ben happier and probably made father happier. I think this book was very sad but well written. It is well written, because this book really was easier to draw the picture in my mind, than others. I want to know how authors write like this.

Reflection of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes By:Juhyun

The book I’m reflecting on is called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by:Elenor Correr. The reason I’m reflecting on this book is because this book is very interesting. First there is a girl called Sadako, in Japan that wanted to be a runner when she grew up. She was very fast at running. One day while she was running, she fell on the track and fainted. When she went to the hospital, her family knew that she had the atom bomb disease, which was Leukemia. Sadako was so sad and upset until her best friend Chizuko came with some paper and one golden paper crane. Chizuko told her that if she made a thousand of those paper cranes, the gods would make a wish come true. Then, Sadako starts to make the paper cranes. In the hospital, she made a friend called Kenji which was the only young friend he made. Kenji was 9 years old and also had Leukemia. He got Leukemia from his mom. Few days later Kenji died. But still Sadako believed herself that she will get healed. One night she was so tired but still made a paper crane. That was her last night, and the last crane she made. This book, in my opinion, it is a little bit sad because it Sadako died. But in general, I liked this book.

Unesco Bangkok

At school, we went to the MPB1 where there was a lot of organizations that helped the world to become a better place. They came to our school to teach us about differernt global issues.  There was 1 organization I liked the most. The organization I liked the most and made me pay the most attention was UNESCO BANGKOK. In this organization, they promote education to the poor people. I like this because, if you are smart, you can get food and water. This means education provides other valuble things. Because there are very little people that didn’t get education. In order to help, you can visit the site yourself, or also tell your friends about this organization.

Ruby’s Wish–a Reflection By: Juhyun and Tim

Tim and I are writing a blog post about the book Ruby’s Wish by Shirin Yim Bridges.

The book is about a girl named Ruby. Back in Ancient China, the boys would go to University while the girls would get married. But Ruby didn’t want to get married. She wanted to go to University. She told her grandfather. And on New Years Day, she got her wish and became one of the first female students.

Our teacher told us a strategy that good readers build the world of the story in their heads by noticing all the details that make the characters daily life experiences different than our own.

We made post-its in the book to help us pinpoint where the time is different from ours by using the text and the pictures. For example, in our book, our setting was in China. And we made a post-it of the character’s clothing, the houses, ink brushes, and an abacus. We noticed they wore silk robes but now we wear T-shirts and jeans etc, the houses have an old-fashioned roof, circle shaped doors, patterned windows, and small houses. This made us notice that the book was Historical Fiction.
