The Birchbark House

By: Louise Erdrich

This story is about a girl named Omakayas. It takes place in Michigan in different seasons in the 1800 hundreds. On one winter night a visitor came and died with a disease. This disease was called smallpox. A lot of people in the tribe got the disease and died. One of the people was Baby Neewo. Baby Neewo was Omakayas little brother. I think this was a very big moment in the story because Omakayas always wanted to visit him so I think he meant a lot to Omakayas.

I think the most important part in the story was when Omakayas found out that she was from a different island than her family. It was called The Sprit Island. I think this was an important part because in the whole story she thought her mother had given birth to her. But then she finds this out at the end.

I would give this book 8/10. I thought it was exciting and interesting. I thought it was interesting at the end. I think it would be really interesting to come from a different island than my family when you thought this your whole life.

Seesaw Girl by: Erin

Seesaw Girl

By: Linda Sue Park

This story was about a girl named Jade Blossom. It takes place in the 17th century in Soul, Korea. In these times girls were not allowed to go outside their family’s inner court. Jade does not want to stay in her court, she wants to go to the marketplace and see the mountains.

I think Jade is a trouble maker because one day she goes outside her family’s inner court. She wanted to go see her aunt Willow who was living in her husband’s inner court. Willow refuses to see her because she doesn’t want Jade to go against her family rules. The main reason was because she wasn’t her aunt anymore.

I think the most important part was when Jade got her cousin and jumped up and down so she see over the walls of her inner court. She finally saw the market place and the mountains.

I would give this book 8/10. I thought this book was interesting because I learned a lot about the Korean history that I never knew before.

Global Issue Network-Plant a Tree Today By Erika

I wrote three organizations on the paper and I chose one of it which is the organization named Plant a Tree Today, and they had an activity. There were two types of activity and one of it was to plant a seed in the soil, and another one was to answer the question that they had. I tried to answer the question, and I did, but it was very hard.

A woman told me that she wanted to tell us that that we should not cut down the trees. Because if there is no trees, there will be no Oxygen to breath. So she wanted to say that she want to save an environment. So we should not cut down the trees. The goal is not to cut down the trees and try to plant seeds in the soil. If you want to make a difference then plant a tree today!

Global Issues by: Erin

The organization that impressed me when we visited the Global Issues Network Conference was the Panya Project. This organization was about building houses for people that don’t have one. This impressed me because I think it was interesting how they made the houses out of three things and mixed it with water. I also thought it would be fun to go to a certain part of Thailand and make houses for people in need. I think this is helping people to be caring for other people. Love.

That is the

main word

of

Valentines day.

On Valentines day,

hearts,

are formed,

love notes

are passed,

flowers,

are given.

BOOM!

Lights flickering

in the

dark sky.

Lighting up

the whole

earth.

Sparkling,

like stars.

BAAM!

The stars

fade

away.

White socks Only-Mary and Erin historical fiction reading strategy

Mary and I (Erin) read a book called “White Socks Only” by Evelyn Coleman. Our teacher gave us a strategy, where good readers build the world of the story in their heads by noticing all the details that make the characters daily life experience different that our lives.

On page 1 we noticed a detail that the grandma was speaking southern-like, so we guessed that they live in the south. We don’t hear that kind of language in Bangkok. On page 2 we noticed in the picture, the girl was in a white dress, white socks, and black patent-leather shoes. This makes us know that this was in the past. On page 7 she took off her patent-leather shoes, and stepped on the white only fountain. Today we don’t have white only fountains. On page 15 her family and friends surrounded her after she came home from the white only water fountain now a days the only people that will surrounded you are your mom, dad, and brother or sister.

We did this post because we are starting our historical fiction unit. So we learned how to use this strategy for when reading our own books in our historical fiction unit.

Skiing,

down

a big

mountain.

The wind

turns

your cheeks

rosy red.

Your ears

turn into

icicles.

Snowflakes,

fall on your

eyelashes.

At break,

relaxing

by the fireplace,

drinking

hot cocoa.

Roller Coaster by:Erin

When going up a hill

on a

roller coaster ride,

the excitement,

horror,

nervous,

scare,

build up in your body.

Click Clack

Click Clack,

as it pulls you

up the hill.

As you get closer

to the hill,

the excitement,

horror,

nervous,

scare,

build up even more.

Then, you get

To the top.

And.

WHOOSH!
