Poetry Unit in room 227

Hello Visitors!

Happy New Year.  We are in the midst of our poetry unit and I must say that I am truly blown away by the level of thought, creativity and depth that many of the students are putting into their poems.  I have asked students to post their favorite poem(s) thus far and encourage them to post additional poems as they write more.

We start each day in writing workshop with a mini-lesson using Lucy Calkins’ lessons.  We also look at several mentor poets for inspiration and to set an example for us as we learn different strategies.

Please feel free to comment on their poems.  I know they appreciate hearing feedback!

Yours in learning,

Miss R. Bulsza

Can’t Think (a poem) by Olivia

Flying Rider (a poem) By Ty

(Based on the book Eragon)

Flying, falling

Wings spread

Me on the back of an amazing

Fire breathing dragon

My hair whooshing back

Trees, mountains so small from below

Villages of people small as ants

Picking up speed

Wings folding

Holding on

Falling towards the

Ground

Faster, faster

Spinning in the air

Roaring

Then wings go up

Gliding down

Legs out

Then softly on the ground

Roller Coaster by:Erin

When going up a hill

on a

roller coaster ride,

the excitement,

horror,

nervous,

scare,

build up in your body.

Click Clack

Click Clack,

as it pulls you

up the hill.

As you get closer

to the hill,

the excitement,

horror,

nervous,

scare,

build up even more.

Then, you get

To the top.

And.

WHOOSH!

The Roller Coaster (a poem) by Olivia

Thought it was safe      but I was fooled

WEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Down we go

Faster and faster

Whoosh wish-wash

Where’s my stomach I can see can’t feel it

Screaming all around and the classic line ” I am going to throw up!!!”

My eardrums ready to pop with all the ruckus

I will never go on this roller coaster again but

Maybe on more time.

Class door (a poem) By Juhyun

Grey

Wide

But not very thick

2 hexagon windows

And,

2 doors

1 moving

And

1 not

With a sphere handle

On the moving one

Dancers On The Move (a poem) By:Daniela

Dancers moving back and forth

twirling and swirling

spining and falling

faster and slower

jumping and running

never stop dancing

keep on the move.
